Why Is This Important?
Esophageal cancer occurs in the esophagus, which is the tube connecting your throat to your stomach. Esophageal cancer usually begins in the cells lining the inside of the esophagus and grows outward. Each year, esophageal cancer accounts for around 1% of all new cancer cases and 2.6% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. This equates to approximately 22,370 cases and 16,130 deaths. The five-year survival rate is 21.6%.

Numerator: | The number of esophageal cancer cases newly diagnosed in New Mexico residents within a specified time period. |
Denominator: | The estimated population of New Mexico residents within a specified time period. |
How Are We Doing?
New Mexico has averaged about 109 new cases of esophageal cancer per year from 2017 to 2021. Rates of esophageal cancer diagnosis in New Mexico have remained relatively steady over recent decades.
How Do We Compare With the U.S.?
Nationally, the incidence of esophageal cancer is 4.0 cases per 100,000. New Mexico is about the same, with an incidence of 3.9 cases per 100,000.
