Incidence of Cancer of the Larynx by County, New Mexico, 2017-2021
Why Is This Important?
Laryngeal cancer, or throat cancer, is a cancer that forms in tissues of the larynx, which is the lower part of the throat also known as the "voice box." Laryngeal cancer accounts for 0.6% of all newly diagnosed cancers and 0.6% of cancer deaths in the U.S each year, with about 12,650 new cases and 3,880 deaths annually. The five-year survival rate is 61.5%. Men and older adults experience greater rates of laryngeal cancer, and tobacco use is generally considered to be the biggest risk factor for developing laryngeal cancer.

How Are We Doing?
New Mexico has averaged about 60 new cases of laryngeal cancer per year from 2017 to 2021. Since 1990, age-adjusted rates of laryngeal cancer in New Mexico have decreased by nearly 40%, which is consistent with national trends. The decrease is thought to be the result of fewer people smoking. Since 2010 the age-adjusted rate has remained relatively stable.
