Incidence of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma by County, New Mexico, 2017-2021

Why Is This Important?
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) refers to cancers of the lymphatic system. Each year, NHL accounts for over 4% of all new cancer cases and over 3% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. This equates to approximately 80,470 cases and 20,250 deaths. The five-year survival rate is 74%. The causes of NHL are unknown, but studies have shown an association with certain chemicals that may impair the immune system, as well as certain types of viruses. The common mechanism for these factors appears to be immunosuppression.
Definition
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) incidence refers to the number of persons newly diagnosed with NHL within a specified time period. Measures include 1) age-adjusted NHL incidence rates (adjusted by the direct method to the 2000 US standard population); and 2) age-adjusted incidence rates by race/ethnicity. All rates are expressed per 100,000 persons.

How the Measure is Calculated
Numerator: | The number of NHL cases newly diagnosed in New Mexico residents within a specified time period. The data are based on the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program incidence site recode for NHL: 33041-33042. http://seer.cancer.gov/siterecode/ |
Denominator: | The estimated population of New Mexico residents during a specified time period. |
How Are We Doing?
New Mexico has averaged about 375 new cases of NHL per year between 2017 and 2021. The age-adjusted rate of NHL in New Mexico has declined approximately 9% since 2001, consistent with the national downward trend.
How Do We Compare With the U.S.?
The rate of new cases of NHL was 19.0 per 100,000 population nationally, compared to 14.0 per 100,000 in New Mexico. NHL is more common in men than women, and among the White population. In New Mexico, the highest rate is among Asian/Pacific Islanders, followed by Whites.
