Data Notes

  • American Community Survey Queries

    The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing survey conducted by the United States Bureau of the Census. It gathers data on demographic, economic and social characteristics at various geographic levels within the United States. Data from the ACS are aggregated into one, three and five year periods. The data presented in this query tool are aggregated at the five year level, which makes these estimates more stable for New Mexico's sparsely populated areas.

    To improve the accuracy of the ACS estimates for New Mexico, we applied the percentages provided by the ACS to the mid-year population estimates produced by the University of New Mexico Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) Program. For instance, the ACS percentage from the 2009-2013 dataset were applied to 2011 New Mexico GPS population estimates to provide an estimate for the number of New Mexicans affected.

    The estimates for New Mexico's 108 Small Areas were calculated by aggregating the ACS data at the census tract level and pooling the standard errors.

  • Children Under Age 5 in Poverty

    To estimate the number of children under age 5 in poverty, the percentage of children under age 5 living in families with related children under age 18 with incomes under the Federal Poverty Level was applied to the total estimated number of children under age 5 in the New Mexico population.

  • New Mexico's 108 Small Areas

    Small Area median values were estimated as the median of the census tract medians for census tracts that comprise the small area.
